Max Minghella is best known for his roles as Divya Narendra in “The Social Network” and Nick Blaine in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but he’s about to redefine his career at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. The actor makes his directorial debut at the event with “Teen Spirit,” starring Elle Fanning as an aspiring pop star. Minghella wrote the film as well.
“Teen Spirit” stars Fanning as Violet, a shy teenager from the Isle of Wight with major music dreams. When Violet secures a spot on an international singing competition (think “American Idol” or “The X Factor”), she makes her play for pop stardom. The supporting cast includes Rebecca Hall and Zlatko Buric.
Fanning performed all of her own songs on the film’s soundtrack, which includes original songs and covers of tracks from Robyn, Ariana Grande, Elle Goulding, and more. The film is one of numerous music dramas heading to TIFF this year, others being the Venice premieres “A Star Is Born” and “Vox Lux.”
